What is "Professional Mentoring"?

CLA Professional Mentoring is a streamlined version of the mentoring programs that are present in many professional environments. Each student who chooses to be involved in the program is matched with a professional working in an area of information management of interest to the student. The program at Dalhousie is intended to provide both students and professionals with an informal opportunity to explore and discuss career paths and opportunities.

Once the matches have been made, a reception is held to which all program participants are invited meet their partner for the first time. Following the initial meeting maintain their relationship in the way that suits them best.

We encourage students and partners to determine what types of activities work best for them. A few suggestions:

•  a tour of the workplace

•  job shadowing experience

•  regular email correspondence

•  a resume re-vamping session

•  career guidance

•  an introduction to other information professionals at events such as conferences, lectures or meetings

 

How can I get involved?

Students:

Fill out a Professional Mentoring application form and submit a hard copy to Alyssa Graybeal's mailbox in the SIM Common Room by Friday, October 1st, 2010.
